When you are hand stitching try keeping a small sponge or cloth near your thread reel treated with silicone spray. Draw the thread through it as you draw it off the cop. It gives the thread a silkier feel, it flows more smoothly through the fabric and you get less tangles.
The same can be done with your machine threads although it is easier to attach a small sponge to the high thread guide on an industrial machine than on a domestic one. If you can achieve this then you will find that the thread flows through your needle and the tension block more smoothly. You can do the same with your bobin winder as well. You will find that his works especially well when machining heavy fabrics with thicker threads.
