  • Cleaning Tapestry

    Morning All,

I am currently re-braiding and tidying up an old chair, which has got tapestry on it. The tapestry on the seat is quite dirty and dusty do any of you have an ideas as to how I can just give a bit of a clean. Don't want to use any upholstery cleaners as am afraid of what it might do! This chair and the tapestry is about a million years old! Client just wants it tidying up as it was her mothers, who has sadly passed away now.

    Any ideas greatfully received.
    Kindest Regards,
    Karen

    Would a gentle vacuum help?

I have just had a google and there is some useful info out there about making a muslin bag and filling with bran to make a cleaning 'bag' to rub over the surface. e.g. http://www.wikihow.com/Clean-a-Tapestry-with-Bran

I'd give it a gentle vacuum - if necessary, tape some muslin over the hoover's nozzle. Anything else is a specialist job.

        Go with the light hovering.
I have just had the same sort of job in, lots of sentimental value regarding the tapestery work.

          Re: Cleaning Tapestry

Hi all thank for all of your suggestions. I gave it a light hoover (which did absolutely nothing unfortunately), I then decided that a very small nozzle on the end of the air compressor might do the trick and it did it basically blew the dirt out of it! Still not perfect but cleaner than it was and as much as I am willing to do as I think next stage would be a pro!
          Kindest Regards,
          Karen

            Hello Karen,

Well done with the compressor. I was going to suggest the hairdryer on cold.... Another idea is fine table salt. It's great for cleaning silk flower heads. You put the heads in a paper bag with salt and shake vigorously. As you had to take the tapestry off, I wondered if you could give it the salt and shake treatment?
