  • continuous zip on piped cushions

Help required! I have started to use concealed zip on unpiped cushions, (very smart indeed) but I am having real trouble putting them in piped covers. Has anyone had success with this? I just cannot get the edge close enough to the piping, wonder if I need to insert some kind of flange, that would kind of defeat the object maybe. Ho Hum, hope a lot of unpiped ones turn up soon so I can use up my stock!
    Thanks

Re: continuous zip on piped cushions

    Hi Gill
I have just asked Edna in the workroom how she does it and she uses a piping foot to get as close as she can to the teeth of the zipping...... be careful though and too close and you can't move the slider.
She has tried using the concealed machine foot but found the piping foot much better.....
Let me know if this works out ok if not I will take a little video of her doing it and send it to you.

ooh! you are a star Penny I was beginning to wonder if I should sew the side of the zip onto the piping fabric, before I put the piping in! Honestly I was at it for 3 hours the other week and still not happy. I was doing it the way you suggest, but maybe I should persevere Grrr!

I haven't tried it, but I'm sure I read somewhere that it can help to run a warm iron over the tape/teeth just before sewing it in place. It temporarily 'opens' the teeth a little so easier to sew close. When they cool again they roll back.

I think Penny has just left for her trip to the USA (not jealous at all!!!)

In the meantime if you look on YouTube for 'invisible zip welting' there are quite a few videos made by US makers......

Didn't Philip do a video on inserting a concealed zip in a piped cushion? PS thanks Gill for the advice earlier on the austrian blind batten.

Re: continuous zip on piped cushions

The trick is to add the concealed zip to the piped edge prior to joining the front and back together. Take the piped front , sew the zip to the piped cushion front, the move onto sewing the other length of the zip to the back section. then join the front and back together.

I have always found this lady's video priceless
