  • can you check this!!!!!

Hi I am sitting here searching my poor brain as to why this is not working out.

    Pole 180
    1/2 pole 90
    90 + 10 for return + 7 for overlap + 5 for ease
    = 112cm
    F width = 196cm - 112cm
84 left for pleating / 6 = 14cm per pleat (is this too big for double pleats?)

    Spaces
112cm -7cm for overlap and 3cm for the set in 1st pleat
    102cm / 5 = 20cm!!!! This is too big is'nt it?

I have been doing this too long please help.

    Re: can you check this!!!!!

    Hi Sophie,
you want a finished curtain of 95cm (including ease) plus overlap of 5cm and return of 10cm.

for the spaces, 95/12 = 7.91, so rounding up gives 8 spaces at 11.8cm (95/

    the flat curtain is 196cm
    196 - 95 (spaces) - 17 (overlap and return) - 84 for the pleats

    you will need 8 pleats, so 84/8 = 10.5cm.

Does this make sense for you?

      Hi Pen,
Thank you for your reply, but would I be wrong to put 6 pleats into a width 1/2. The fabric is a very thin silk.

I wouldn't say it was wrong, but I'm looking at making the spaces around 12cm each, which I think it is a good size. If you put in only 6 pleats, the spaces would have to be 15.8cm, which as you say is too big. And the pleats would only be 8.7cm.

          Hi Pen,
Please dont laugh but I think I am being really dim here. My pole is 1/2 180cm which 90 you then added on 5 for ease but not the return and overlap why?

            Re: can you check this!!!!!

            Sophie,
does the return go back to the wall? I assumed it did. But even if it doesn't the outside pleat is at the end of the pole so that is where you measure from. If the return is not going back to the wall, I would make it smaller.

I also dont include the overlap in the half pole measurement - when these pieces 'overlap' you just have another 2 or 3cm ease. If you dont want to do this, just divide this amount into the pleats.
            Kind regards

Hi just thought I would put this photo up of the completed curtains. Sorry not a great photo but taken on my phone. Having worked out the measurements I realised that I didnt have enough fabric for the pleats to be perfect but I had what I had so made the best of it.

They look great, what a lovely job you have done with the amount of fabric avaliable.

Hi Tam and Penny, yes it was the fabric I showed you all. I also used florist wire at the return edge as I didnt want to screw any eyes into the wall it has worked really well so will use that again.

Interesting to hear about the wire - where did you place it in the heading and how did you secure it in place?

                          Re: can you check this!!!!!

Hi Louise I put the florist wire in an envelope of lining then sewed it onto the buckram before I inserted it.

                          Hope that makes sense.

Thanks - did you sew it about mid-way down the drop of the buckram or nearer the top?

Hi Louise I sewed the wire in half way down the buckram.
